FAMILY is where I BELONG

Introduction

The “Family is where I belong” campaign, with hashtags #KeepMeSafe and #MyFamilyMyRight, aims to promote family-based care and community support for children at risk in India. This initiative, spearheaded by the DB YaR (Don Bosco Youth at Risk) Forum, seeks to create a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable children by emphasizing the importance of family and community-based care solutions.

Problem Statement

In India, a significant number of children are at risk of being separated from their families due to various socio-economic factors, including poverty, lack of access to education, and inadequate community support systems. This separation often leads to children being placed in institutional care, which can have long-lasting negative impacts on their emotional, social, and psychological development. Despite the known benefits of family-based care, there is a lack of awareness and support for alternatives to institutional care, resulting in the continued separation of children from their families and communities.

Significance

The “Family is where I belong” campaign addresses a critical gap in the current child welfare landscape in India. Few reasons are stated below:

  1. Child Development: Research consistently shows that children thrive best in family environments. By promoting family-based care, we can ensure better emotional, social, and cognitive development outcomes for at-risk children.
  2. Cultural Preservation: Keeping children within their families and communities helps maintain their cultural identity and social connections.
  3. Long-term Social Impact: By strengthening families and communities, the campaign contributes to building more resilient societies that can better support vulnerable children.
  4. Alignment with International Standards: The campaign aligns with global best practices and international conventions on children’s rights, particularly the UN Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children.

Goals and Objectives

The overarching goal of the “Family is where I belong” campaign is to promote and facilitate family-based care and community support for children at risk in India. The specific objectives are:

  1. Awareness and Education
  2. Stigma Reduction
  3. Community Engagement
  4. Youth Empowerment

Methodology

The campaign will employ a multi-faceted approach to deliver its message effectively.

  1. Social Media Outreach
  2. Youth-Led Initiatives
  3. Visual Storytelling and Educational Resources
  4. Celebratory Events
  5. Community Engagement and Collaborative Partnerships
  6. Continuous Learning and Integration

Impact

The expected outcomes and impact of the “Family is where I belong” campaign include:

  1. Increased Awareness: A measurable increase in public awareness about the importance of family-based care and community support for at-risk children.
  2. Behavioral Change: Positive shifts in community attitudes towards family preservation and alternative care options, leading to more families receiving support before reaching crisis points.
  3. Youth Empowerment: Increased participation of children and youth in processes related to their care and well-being.
  4. Collaborative Network: A stronger, more coordinated network of stakeholders working together to promote family-based care solutions.
  5. Cultural Preservation: Strengthened cultural ties and social connections for at-risk children who remain within their families and communities.

By focusing on these areas, the “Family is where I belong” campaign aims to create a lasting positive impact on the lives of at-risk children in India, promoting a society where every child has the opportunity to grow up in a safe, nurturing family environment.
